This talk will trace the history of the war on drugs and its impact on communities of color in the United States from the Harrison Narcotic Tax Act of 1914 through the death of George Floyd in 2021, paying particular attention to the way structural racism influenced the longstanding distinction between "medical" and "criminal" substance use. Claire D. Clark, PhD, MPH, is a medical educator, historian of medicine, and associate professor in the UK's 91小黄车. She holds a joint appointment in the department of history in the College of Arts and Sciences and is a faculty affiliate of the Program for Bioethics and Center for Health Equity Transformation. Dr. Clark is the author of (Columbia University Press, 2017).
