Research
The Gordon lab studies metabolism and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in two primary lines of investigation:
Mechanisms regulating dietary fat absorption by the intestine.
- Genes that control chylomicron secretion.
- The influence of fat absorption on body weight, metabolism, and atherosclerosis.
Inflammatory protease activity in the artery wall and suppression by lipoproteins.
- Natural mechanisms of inflammatory regulation involving lipoproteins.
- Development of lipoprotein-targeting protease inhibitors.
Research techniques:
- Mouse models for atherosclerosis and intestinal lipid absorption studies.
- Cell culture including genetically altered cell lines and transendothelial transport experiments.
- Genetic manipulation using CRISPR.
- Confocal microscopy including immunofluorescence.
- Electron microscopy.
- Molecular biology: PCR, quantitative real-time PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, mouse genotyping.
- Next-generation sequencing: RNAseq gene-expression analysis.
- Protein expression techniques: SDS-PAGE, western blotting, immunohistochemistry.
- Mass spectrometry: Proteomics and structural cross-linking.
